Basic Self-Introduction Format

A typical Japanese self-introduction follows this structure:

  1. Greeting - Say hello
  2. Your name - Introduce your name
  3. Where you're from - Mention your country or hometown
  4. Your occupation or hobby - Share a little about yourself
  5. Closing phrase - Wrap up your introduction politely

1. Greeting

Start with a polite greeting:

  • おはようございます。 (Ohayou gozaimasu.) - Good morning.
  • こんにちは。 (Konnichiwa.) - Good afternoon.
  • こんばんは。 (Konbanwa.) - Good evening.
  • はじめまして (Hajimemashite) - Hello (for those who meet for the first time)

2. Saying Your Name

You can introduce your name like this:

  • わたしは [name] です。 (Watashi wa [name] desu.) – I am [name].
  • [name] といいます。 ([Name] to iimasu.) – My name is [name]. (Slightly more formal)
  • [name] と申します。  ([Name] to moushimasu.) – My name is [name]. (More formal)

3. Mentioning Your Country or Hometown

To say where you are from:

  • (アメリカ、フランス、ドイツ、イギリス) からきました。 ([Country] kara kimashita.) – I’m from [country].
  • (ニューヨーク、パリ、ベルリン、ロンドン、東京) からきました。 ([City] kara kimashita.) – I’m from [city].

Example:

わたしはアメリカからきました。 (Watashi wa Amerika kara kimashita.) – I am from America.

4. Talking About Your Job or Hobbies

If you want to mention your job:

  • 私は [occupation] です。 (Watashi wa [occupation] desu.) – I am a [job].
  • Occupation: 先生、学生、会社員 (sensei, gakusei, kaishain) – teacher, student, office worker.

If you want to talk about hobbies:

  • 私のしゅみは [hobby] です。 (Watashi no shumi wa [hobby] desu.) – My hobby is [hobby].
  • 私は [activity] が好きです。 (Watashi wa [activity] ga suki desu.) – I like [activity].

Common hobbies:

  • 読書 (dokusho) – reading
  • スポーツ (supōtsu) – sports
  • 音楽 (ongaku) – music
  • 旅行 (ryokō) – traveling

Example:

私の趣味は旅行です。 (Watashi no shumi wa ryokō desu.) – My hobby is traveling.

5. Closing Phrase

End your introduction politely:

  • どうぞよろしくお願いします。 (Dōzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.) – Nice to meet you.
  • よろしくお願い申し上げます。(Yoroshiku onegai moushiage masu.)– Nice to meet you. (More formal)
  • よろしくね。 (Yoroshiku ne.) – Casual way to say “Nice to meet you.”

Example Self-Introduction

Here’s a full self-introduction example:

"初めまして。私の名前はジョンです。アメリカから来ました。私は学生です。趣味は音楽を聞くことです。どうぞよろしくお願いします。"
(Hajimemashite. Watashi no namae wa Jon desu. Amerika kara kimashita. Watashi wa gakusei desu. Shumi wa ongaku o kiku koto desu. Dōzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.)
Translation: "Hello. My name is John. I am from America. I am a student. My hobby is listening to music. Nice to meet you."

Tips for a Smooth Self-Introduction
