お盆（おぼん） - 日本（にほん）の夏（なつ）の大切（たいせつ）な行事（ぎょうじ）- Obon – An Important Summer Tradition in Japan

今回は日本のお盆について紹介します。
This time, I will introduce Obon.

お盆とは What is Obon

お盆（おぼん）は、日本（にほん）の夏（なつ）に行（おこな）われる、大切（たいせつ）な行事（ぎょうじ）です。
Obon is an important event held in Japan during the summer.

多（おお）くの地域（ちいき）では、8月（がつ）13日（にち）から16日（にち）まで行（おこな）われます。
In many regions, it takes place from August 13th to 16th.

お盆（おぼん）は、亡（な）くなった家族（かぞく）や先祖（せんぞ）の魂（たましい）を迎（むか）えて、感謝（かんしゃ）する時（とき）です。
Obon is a time to welcome the spirits of deceased family members and ancestors, and to show gratitude.

迎え火（むかえび）と送り火（おくりび）

13日（にち）には迎（むか）え火（び）をたき、先祖（せんぞ）の魂（たましい）を家（いえ）に迎（むか）えます。
On August 13th, people light mukaebi (welcoming fire) to guide the spirits home.

16日（にち）には送り火（おく）りびをたき、先祖（せんぞ）の魂（たましい）を見送（みおく）ります。
On August 16th, people light okuribi (farewell fire) to send the spirits back.

有名（ゆうめい）な送り火 – 京都（きょうと）の五山（ござん）送り火（おくりび）

有名（ゆうめい）な送り火（おくりび）に、京都（きょうと）の五山（ござん）送り火（おくりび）があります。
One of the most famous okuribi events is the Gozan Okuribi in Kyoto.

この日（ひ）、京都（きょうと）の山（やま）に「大（だい）」や「妙（みょう）」などの形（かたち）の火（ひ）が灯（とも）されます。
On this day, large fires in the shapes of characters such as “大” (dai) and “妙” (myō) are lit on the mountains of Kyoto.

これは、先祖（せんぞ）の魂（たましい）をあの世（よ）へ送（おく）るための美（うつく）しい行事（ぎょうじ）です。
This is a beautiful event to send the spirits back to the afterlife.

Gozan Okuribi in Kyoto – the glowing fire on the mountain is a mystical sight.

地域（ちいき）で違（ちが）うお盆飾（かざ）りや風習（ふうしゅう）

日本（にほん）では、お盆（おぼん）の飾（かざ）りや風習（ふうしゅう）が地域（ちいき）によって違（ちが）います。
In Japan, Obon decorations and customs differ by region.

• 精霊馬（しょうりょううま） – きゅうりやなすで作（つく）る小（ちい）さな馬（うま）や牛（うし）。先祖（せんぞ）が早（はや）く来（き）て、ゆっくり帰（かえ）るように願（ねが）います。
  Shōryō-uma – small horses or cows made from cucumbers and eggplants, symbolizing spirits coming quickly and returning slowly.
  「きゅうりの馬と、なすの牛。かわいくて意味のあるお盆飾りです。」
  A cucumber horse and an eggplant cow – cute and meaningful Obon decorations.

• 灯籠流（とうろうなが）し – 川（かわ）や海（うみ）に灯籠（とうろう）を流（なが）して、先祖（せんぞ）の魂（たましい）を送（おく）ります。
  Tōrō-nagashi – floating lanterns on rivers or the sea to send off the spirits.
  「川に流れる灯籠。水面に映る光がとてもきれいです。」
  Floating lanterns on the river – their reflections create a magical scene.
• 花火（はなび）や太鼓（たいこ） – 一部（いちぶ）の地域（ちいき）では、お盆の夜（よる）に花火大会（はなびたいかい）や太鼓演奏（たいこえんそう）があります。
  Fireworks and Taiko Drums – in some regions, fireworks displays and taiko drum performances are held during Obon nights.

旅行（りょこう）TIPS – Travel Tips

• お盆の時期（じき）は電車（でんしゃ）や飛行機（ひこうき）がとても混（こ）みます。早（はや）めに予約（よやく）しましょう。
  During Obon, trains and flights are very crowded. Make reservations early.
• 京都（きょうと）の五山送り火（ござんおくりび）は8月16日夜（よる）に行（おこな）われます。観光客（かんこうきゃく）が多（おお）いので、場所（ばしょ）は早（はや）く確保（かくほ）しましょう。
  Kyoto’s Gozan Okuribi is held on the night of August 16th. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.
• 灯籠流し（とうろうながし）や花火大会（はなびたいかい）は地域（ちいき）によって日程（にってい）が違（ちが）います。事前（じぜん）に調（しら）べましょう。
  The dates for lantern floating and fireworks vary by region. Check in advance.
